What magazines are missing

I LOVE magazines.

To this day, my mother keeps a bookshelf of Vogue’s in my old bedroom. They bring a smile to my face everytime I look at them.

We have been collecting them since the 90s. We only collected the September issues, but it still says so much. It’s how I ended up in this career and started my love of this industry.

But there is another side

This side motivated me to leave the walls of traditional publishing and find another way; my way.

I’m not saying my way is the right way or only way. It’s just a way and more importantly it’s my way. I haven’t got it all figured out but I knew what I was getting from traditional magazines wasn’t giving me what I was searching for.

Let’s start off with what I LOVE about magazines

I am a taurus. If you know anything about the zodiac you now that taurus are lovers of luxury and beautiful things. I felt guilty for most of life. I was attracted to some of the most luxurious goods out there with no means of owning them, but the attraction was strong.

Magazines were a place I could go and feel like I belonged. Magazines celebrate creative ideas, beautiful design, and luxury like I had never seen. It educated me into a world I wasn’t a part of but desperately wanted to know more about.

Magazines are a place to dream big and learn what true beauty means to you. Still to this day, they allow me to understand what my specific tastes are and get lost in the idea of all the possibilities that could be.

But in my personal style journey, this is where magazines dropped off.

They filled my head with ideas but no way how to make them a reality. This part is on us.

Now, what’s missing

Publications only go so deep. They touch the surface of your desires but don’t get to the root.

How can they? They are speaking to a general audience. Even though many magazines have a specific “woman” they are talking to, this audience is still far too general.

We women are all so different; our likes, our dislikes, bodies, idea of beauty, etc.

This is where you have to ask yourself, “what do you want?”

How do you want to feel in your style, body, life? How can you truly find your unique style if you don't know who you are. And so many of us are letting media shape our visions of ourselves.

Looking to magazines for inspiration is one thing but looking to them for answers is another. We have to look to ourselves and do the work of understand who we are.

By just looking at the shallow end, how can we ever expect to swim in the deep?

I challenge you to dig deeper.

Getting deep with your style is refreshing. Not always popular, though, because going deep requires work. Most of us are comfortable in the lazy river of fashion because so many of us are already there. It’s security in numbers.

So now what?

If you don’t know where to start, I have a few ideas. Check out this blog post I wrote a few months back about How-To Create a 15-MInute Confidence-Boosting Morning Ritual.

Creating a morning ritual based on self love, acceptance, and more importantly JOY, will change your life. Give it a try.

All the love,
